20" x 24" oil-based house paint on artist board most likely an older piece of couch art purchased from a thrift shop and painted over by Benny. early painting by Benny ca. 1995 during his masterpiece phase. 3 years after he perfected his craft and 5 years before he met Purvis young in the lobby of an Atlanta hotel and witnessed him painting and selling a work every 30 seconds. After this Benny began to dumb his strokes down and make quicker paintings for the quicker buck. The paintings from his masterpiece phase are not like that. this is one of his all-time greats. nothing to do with size or subject rather his intent on every brush stroke being precise. He is embedded in his hoarder phase at this point leaving very little street pavement to be seen... cramming as many people in the streets as possible. Those brush strokes for the people are so tiny... you will look at this painting for 20 years and not see it all. This is essentially 8 paintings in one. If you cut the painting into 8 squares, there is enough work in each square to qualify as a hanging piece of art. A true masterpiece by Benny Carter who was murdered at his home in 2014. Written as a suicide by the Rockingham County Sherifs office. Shortly after his death, his estate sale was so vast that there were 3 auctioneers going at once in the different areas of the property to get it all sold. Between his own art and the clocks and art he had bought over the last 40 years.
