Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cylindrical cup that is free-blown from translucent, blue-green glass. Covered in layers of rainbow-hued iridescence, the vessel presents with a gently impressed base and a relatively smooth pontil scar, a cylindrical body, and a slightly pronounced rim. The rounded lip of the vessel suggests this cup was perhaps once the bottom portion of a larger container like a flask or beaker that was damaged and repurposed. Extensive but smooth encrustations in most areas as well as micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Great rainbow iridescence throughout.
