Europe, England, ca. 16th century CE. A carved wooden panel depicting a coat of arms in relief. The emblem is comprised of two shields with spears or swords crossed behind, and two helmets facing each other with ornate crowns on top. The carved panel is framed by a thick border of wood that is nailed to the lower panel. Coats of arms were symbols of hereditary status that distinguished nobility from the peasantry with a visual symbol of rank. This panel has a lovely smooth patina that has developed over the ages and may have hung inside a home of a noble family . Size: 13.875" L x 10.625" W (35.2 cm x 27 cm)
