Item Details
Description
Western Europe, Spain, Renaissance Period, ca. 16th century CE. A marvelous, double-sided vellum page from a religious text of the Catholic Church, perhaps a breviary. Handwritten in black ink, the lovely page displays 12 lines of Gothic Latin script on one side and 11 lines on the other. Each line is delineated by a slender red striation, while parallel red lines adorn the border. One letter is embellished with blue ink, while 4 letters and 1 line are adorned in red. This text matches that of a Catholic hymn which is generally associated with the Common of one Martyr feast. It roughly translates to, "allure knew all their gall reached as high. Ran strongly picked up and pay for you to behave and poured blood reward. On this we humbly ask our loving martyr release erring sheep. The praise of the glory of his father, for his life and the perennial, and the son of the holy comforter, For ever and ever. Amen." Size (of page): 14.75" W x 20.5" H (37.5 cm x 52.1 cm); Size (of matting): 19.875" W x 25.875" H (50.5 cm x 65.7 cm)
