Description
"The Prince and the Pauper" by Mark Twain, published by Charles Webster in 1889, copyright, 1881, by S.L. Clemens (Mark Twain), first edition [BAL 3402]. Later printing of the legendary first edition with one hundred and ninety-two illustrations [first printing was issued in 1882].
The first print (1882) was issued with James Osgood as the publisher. After the unsatisfactory sales, Samuel Clemence (Mark Twain) registered his own publishing company under the name of his managing director Charles Webster. Further printings of The Prince and the Pauper appeared under the Webster imprint.
Hard cover, original publisher's decorated cloth, (some wear: see scan), 6.3/4" x 8.3/4", 411 pages (a little soiling, a few small edge creases) + publisher's advertising; 192 illustrations (including 2 frontispieces), the pages 235 through 319 have a small dump stain at the upper margin [see photos]; a couple pages have small page corner folds, a few pages have a small dark stain at the bottom corner, very good condition.
Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law. A tale for young people of all ages. "Pronounced by high authorities one of the best child's stories ever written."
"Mark Twain is the only writer who deserves the mountains of superlatives your high school English teacher heaped upon him. His writing is fresh, vivid, subtle, and sharp after more than a century, and his insight into human nature remains profound and often moving."
