Map of the provinces of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, with west at the top. Cartographic elements include compass rose, scales, sea banks or shoals, and the Equator. Decorative elements includes angels and Portuguese royal coat of arms. The territory of Ceará includes three of the captaincies granted by the Portuguese crown in 1534 and was contested between the Dutch and the Portuguese. The Dutch ceded their Brazilian territories in 1661.The map was included in the work of João José de Santa Teresa, Istoria delle guerre del regno del Brasile accadute tra la corona di Portogallo e la repubblica di Olanda, Roma, Eredi del Corbelletti, 1698.Borba de Moraes describes the book as "one of the most sumptuous works published in the XVII Century about a Brazilian subject. It was subsidized by 5 thousand cruzados by D. Pedro II, and the most famous engravers of the time did the engraving . . . The "Santa Teresa," as it is known among bibliophiles, is difficult to find complete and in good condition."
