Item Details
Description
This is an excellent floppy-stone head skull cracker war club from the Apache Native American Indians of the 19th Century. The piece is comprised of Indian brain-tanned hide wrapped on a wood haft handle with long fringe hanging off the bottom end as a drop. The head is in a skull cracker style and attached to the haft via hide, allowing the head to flap back and forth, gaining momentum when swung. The piece shows a nice section of frilly Indian hide fringe at the head to haft connection, with a small section of early glass trade seed beads in black and chalk white. Further down, just above the gripping area, is another section of frilly hide fringe, and again at the base is a drop of frilly Indian hide fringes. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton of London, England. The club measures overall 18 inches in length, excluding the fringes, and 3 inches across the head.
