This is the last pattern muzzle loading shoulder weapon issued by the United States. It is the 1863 Type-2 rifle musket, AKA the Model 1864. On the 1863 Springfield the retaining springs for keeping the barrel bands in place were done away with and the bands were changed to screw-tightened friction bands. The screws were a bad idea and bands came loose and slipped off muskets willy-nilly. In 1864 the retaining springs in the stocks were back.

When you think about it the 1863 Springfield is virtually identical to the Special Model 1861 Colt Musket which had been authorized for Colt to produce with rounded screw-tightened friction bands. Older collectors will recall how common truly MINT Colt muskets were in the old days. Crates of unissued examples abounded, many dated 1863. It would be reasonable to assume the Ordnance Department shelved the Colts for the same reason they quit making the Model 1863s.

Overall NRA -Very Good condition. 100% original except the sling swivels which were replaced by a previous collector using surplus examples. The muskets brought home by veterans and used for hunting nearly always have the swivels removed, and collectors always replace them. 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. Wood is very good like a well cared for piece of family heirloom furniture. Faint vestige of the ESA cartouche is visible. Metal is steel grey with good lock markings. The barrel markings are very worn. No finish remains. Bore is fair.
