Item Details
Description
This Civil War period powder flask showcases the elegance and craftsmanship of antebellum metalwork. Constructed primarily from zinc, a material known for its resistance to corrosion, the flask has aged with a dignified patina that speaks to its historical use and significance. It measures approximately 8 inches in length and 4 inches at its widest point, embodying a teardrop shape that was common for the period. The body of the flask is adorned with intricate embossed designs. The front and back feature a symmetrical foliate motif, a flourish of leaves and vines that culminates in a Fleur-de-lis at the neck of the flask. Below this design, the scene becomes pastoral with a finely detailed stag in mid-gallop across a forested landscape, suggesting a connection to the hunting culture of the era.The top of the flask, made of a contrasting brass material, has a slightly tapered spout for dispensing powder, indicative of its practical use in the field. It is secured to the body with a series of rivets and features a lever, now oxidized with verdigris, which would have controlled the release of the powder. The flask still retains its original charging lever, though its functionality after so many years cannot be guaranteed. This particular flask is a silent witness to the tumultuous period of the American Civil War, likely carried by soldiers to hold black powder for their muzzle-loading rifles. Its survival is a testament to the quality of its construction and the care it has received over the decades. Collectors and historians alike would find this piece a significant addition to any collection focused on the material culture of 19th-century America.
