Item Details
Description
A good example of a US arsenal conversion of an 1816 pattern flintlock musket to percussion using the cone-in-barrel conversion. You can even seen the edge of the brass flash pan that was ground flat as part of the conversion. The other external parts were removed, the old vent was plugged, a percussion hammer was fitted, and a nipple mounted on top of the barrel. Many early Civil War volunteers went off to war armed with these.

This one is in attic brown condition like you want to find them. The stock is a deep brown. The buttstock is very good and shows good edges around the lock platform, with a little rounding from handling at the front and just minor handling dings, but a visible cartouche on the reverse flat. The metal is dark with some dark stains, showing some corrosion at the breech from firing (its the percussion caps that do the damage,) but generally smooth metal beyond that.<br
The bands, bandsprings, and front sight/bayonet lug are present. The lock is clearly marked SPRINGFIELD and dated 1823. The mechanics are good. The lower swivel is present. The upper swivel is missing. The ramrod is a period replacement and is either a Confederate made rod or a blacksmith made rod. It is much cruder than the US arsenal rods. Otherwise the musket is complete and a good example of how the US tried to upgrade older arms to keep them in service.

Materials, Packing, and UPS Shipping on this item is $55.00. Insurance is $1.50 per hundred. UPS charges $5 for the signature required service. The insurance and signature service are optional, but there can be no insurance for theft or loss without the UPS signature required, service. If you decline signature service and/or insurance and the neighbor kid steals the box off your porch after UPS leaves it.... or if UPS delivers it to the wrong address, or if the UPS truck crashes and burnsÂ… You are out of luck. I highly recommend the insurance and signature service.
