Description
B. Aplin Howe is yet another of my favorite animal artists of whom little is known. A “sensitively done” painting of a Pug is reproduced in William Secord’s “Dog Painting: 1840-1940,” as a half-page color illustration, but the author acknowledges that about the only thing we know about Howe is that he lived in London. The artist is listed in art reference books, but they only say that, based on three paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy, he was working between the years 1844 and 1857. Two works by Howe are part of the collection of the National Museum of Wales. One is entitled, “Bad and Bijou,” a charming portrait of a white terrier and a dachshund. (There is no indication as to which dog is named “Bad” and which is “Bijou.”) The other painting is “Bit O’ Law,” a portrait of a Greyhound.; This portrait of a spaniel (possibly a King Charles), unusually captured posing sideways, is a winning image of a beloved companion. The large eyes are finely painted and show the dog’s intelligence. There is much detail to the painting of the fur, as well as the mouth, muzzle and nose.; It is signed “B.A. Howe” and dated 1862 along the edge of the spandrel on the bottom right. It is one of a pair, also signed and dated 1862, that I am offering separately. (See last photo.); It is housed in its original, gilded wooden frame with gesso overlay decoration. The spandrel is also original. The overlay decorations include shell-shaped corners with long feather-like designs. Small flowers with leaves were also placed on the frame. This highly decorated original frame adds much to the value of the painting.; The painting has been professionally cleaned and re-varnished and is in ready-to-hang condition. There is craquelure throughout as well as remnants of the original varnish, which causes the camera flash to pick it out in white dots that do not exist.; The diameter of the tondo painting itself is 9-½ inches. With the frame it measures 14-½ inches square.
