Edmund Havell English Spaniel Sporting Painting 1837. Portrait of a beautifully rendered English Spaniel dog with expressive eyes named "Dash," by Edmund Havell, painted in 1837. Both father and son Havell were named Edmund and both accomplished painters so it is not entirely sure whether it is the senior Edmund (1787-1864) or Junior (1819-1899) who is the artist of this work; however, it is likely Junior as he is known for his sporting portraits of horses and dogs. Written on the back is "Dash. The study of the head of - an old English - Spaniel. The property of Miss Mitford - Three mile x N. Rieding by E. Havell. June 1, 1837." Mounted in a carved, gold painted frame with purple velvet liner.
