Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A fine collection of 38 pottery spindle whorl beads that are arranged into an enticing and wearable form. Strung on modern stringing, the beads present in a variety of shapes including hemispherical, lozenge, gourd, cylindrical, and hourglass, all in hues of coral, ochre, chocolate, burgundy, salmon, and cream. The beads are arranged smallest to largest along each half towards the center where the larger, hemispherical beads are shown. Many beads are incised with linear motifs, and these motifs on some smaller beads are accented with rubbed white pigment. Size (necklace): 29.5" L (74.9 cm); (largest bead): 1.3" W (3.3 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Pottery beads are ancient, and stringing is modern. Necklace strand is knotted along the terminals and does not have an articulating clasp. Repair to 3 beads, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor chips and abrasions to some pottery beads, with fading to some pigment, and softening to some incised details. Nice preservation to most incised motifs.
