East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A charming blue-on-white porcelain ink stone, used to grind an ink stick. Notice that the side with the eight trigrams has a raised foot. This was actually the underside of the piece, while the hollowed out area is where the ink would have been mixed with water and ground into a usable paste. A lovely example. Size: 7.8" W x 3.3" H (19.8 cm x 8.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2008
