Native American, Pacific Northwest, Oregon, Cascade Mountains, Obsidian Cliffs, Archaic to Developmental period, ca. 8000 BCE to 1000 CE. This is a large cutting blade, hand-knapped from a mahogany obsidian stone with black veining. The obsidian is flaked into a bifacial shape, with convex faces, and a slightly curved, petaloid profile. A sharp edge encircles the entirety of the blade, and a short neck protrudes from slightly notched shoulders, perhaps for attaching to a pole. Native Americans have used obsidian for making cutting tools, arrowheads, and spear points for thousands of years. The stone flakes to a razor-sharp edge that is perfect for cutting, and the stone is a gorgeous hue, and thus often regarded a precious item. Size: 6" L x 3.25" W (15.2 cm x 8.3 cm)
