Title: Civil War certificate of the Ladies Christian Commission of the Pacific
Place Published: San Francisco
Publisher:
Date Published: July 3, 1865
Description:
Printed and handwritten document signed of the Ladies Christian Commission of the Pacific. Presented to Massachusetts clergyman W.R.Sprague for his $50 contribution to the Commission. Designed and lithographed with military vignettes by Baker. 18x24".
Signed by Commission President Mary E. Keeney, wife of the U.S. Army Medical Director at San Francisco, and Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. M.E. Alvord, mother of the California banking magnate and San Francisco Mayor. The Ladies Christian Commission of the Pacific, "auxiliary to the United States Christian Commission organized for the relief of the Brave Men of Our Army and Navy", was not organized until late in the Civil War, which may explain the rarity of these certificates given to contributors. Baker was known for his engravings of Yosemite, Gold Rush Sacramento and San Francisco. Only known copy, an earlier version, held by Yale, being much smaller and apparently without Baker's artwork.
