Rare vintage newspapers from the boom town of Bodie, California, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. The newspapers offer a vivid glimpse of life on the frontier. Besides articles of both national and local interest (one decries the cheating of Chinese laundry-persons, though in decidedly racist fashion), the many advertisements and classified notices are perhaps even more revealing. On the first page alone of the earlier issue are advertisements for nine different saloons, liquor dealers and purveyors of beer. There is one for milk. The second issue, four months later, has ads for 14 sellers of alcohol on the first page, plus a number of hotels with fine bars. No milk to be found.

Condition

The paper of the earlier issue is darkened, brittle, chipped around edges with several tears, split along spine, just good; the later issue in nearly fine condition.
