Description

Benjamin Champney
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, 1817-1907
Depicts ships off a cliff lined shore with waves crashing against the large boulders. Champney was associated with White Mountain New Hampshire painters, renowned for his landscape and floral paintings. Artist Washington Allston encouraged Champney to go to Europe, taking numerous trips to France and Italy which sparked his interest in landscapes. Later in life, Champney became a founder of the Boston Art Club, exhibiting his works widely throughout Boston and New York.

Condition

Area of minor wear lower right corner under signature, frame with areas of losses to corners, otherwise painting in very good condition and presents nicely.
