Estate find Hudson River School and White Mountain artist with Boston stretchers:

CHAMPNEY, Benjamin (American, 1817-1907): Winter Forest Landscape with Figure on Path, oil/canvas, 10 x 7 inches, signed lower right "B. Champney". Note characteristic Boston School canvas tabs on rear of stretcher. Unframed.

Provenance:
While the majority of our items come from typically more private sources (such as the next ten lots from an Upstate New York family), we acquired this painting from an auction of estate items only because we had seen it previously in the original owner's family's home. It belonged to a retired professor who was moving and his family was the original owner of the work for well over 100 years - acquired three to four generations ago. They have other Champneys in their family and had a summer scene by Champney which they were keeping. When we acquired this there was a thin modern frame chop molding installed by the present generation and it was our intention to find a deeper cove molding for it and consign it to a New England auction. Before we embarked on a frame quest, one of our relatives offered it, unframed, on their website, where it sold to a European buyer, we believe with Boston ties, for noticeably over $2,000.00. The customer never took delivery due to financial issues and so it has never left our office since it arrived and it seems to be the one item everybody comments on when they walk in so we will be sad to see it leave. It's a little gem, slightly in the rough, that needs the sky scuff touched up and a great little Victorian frame. Guaranteed an original Benjamin Champney.

In generally quite sound estate condition save for following details: Scuff in sky. Edge wear to all sides that will fall under frame rabbets once framed. Canvas is a bit loose and could be tightened. Even surface dirt and mellowed varnish with a few specks around the figure. Not lined and no visible craquelure. Unframed.
