Description
1818 Slavery QUAKER New Jersey Witch Hunts Negroes Journal of John Woolman
“he whose tender mercies are over all his works hath placed a principle in the human mind which incites to exercise goodness towards every living creature.”
– John Woolman
The Journal of John Woolman was a posthumously published autobiography of the life of Quaker preacher John Woolman. Woolman had many profound viewpoints, most of which are evident in his journal. He wrote on anti-slavery, anti-materialistic ideas as well as discussing the corruption that comes with power. According to Hogg,
“this journal describes Woolmans attacks on slavery and the slave trade in American 1754-69.”
He also believed that religious and social tolerance are the key to humanity, and that the worlds intolerance is what lead to many of the witch hunts and witch trials both in American and in Europe.
This 1818 edition, published as The Works of John Woolman was published in Philadelphia, is a rare early American edition.
