Item Details

Description

North America, United States, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ca. 1845 to 1855 CE; Pittsburgh, ca. 1875 to 1886 CE. A collection of 3 historical glass whiskey flasks: 2 of the Dyottville Glass Works' Washington-Taylor series of glass flasks, and a Cunningham & Co. eagle flask. The largest is with the bust of General and future President Zachary Taylor on one side embossed in profile under the script "GEN. TAYLOR NEVER SURRENDERS" and "DYOTTVILLE GLASS WORKS PHILDA." The other side features George Washington in profile under "THE FATHER OF HIS COUNTRY." The other flask is identical but of a smaller size, and both are a translucent aquamarine glass and mold-blown with pontil marks on the base. The third flask is an eagle facing left with shield and arrows and a banner in his beak with an oval frame below. The reverse is the same, and the oval is worn smooth but probably once contained CUNNINGHAM/ & CO/PITTSBURGH on obverse and GLASS/MANUFACTURERS" on reverse. Size (larger Washington flask): 5.5" W x 8.25" H (14 cm x 21 cm)

Condition

Bubbles have created cavities on the shoulder eagle flask. Stable hairline fissures radiating from rim of eagle flask to shoulder. Chips to the rim of smaller Washington flask. Larger Washington flask is intact. Both Washington flasks have pontil marks/scars on the base and added felt pads to the base for stability.
