A CHINESE FOURTH RANK CIVIL OFFICIAL'S MIDNIGHT BLUE SILK SURCOAT, PUFU, QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, the backside centering a fourth rank square insignia badge embroidered with gold and silver couched thread and enclosing a spread-winged white goose taking off towards the red coral beaded sun amidst scrolling clouds, bats, sacred objects, auspicious blooms, eternal knots, and set above rolling clouds over Lishui stripes, within a conforming border of scrolling vine partitioned by stylized lotus blooms on a black silk background, height: 42", width: 69"; including cover, height: 50 3/8", width: 78".

Good condition with some expected loose threads, old repairs, some light fading, and mounted within a modern rectangular transparent plastic cover over the back of the surcoat which is hand-stitched to a neutral silk-lined panel.
