The canvas has not been lined. There is a small patch repair to the canvas verso which is visible recto as a repaired tear to the right of the mammoth. One further small patch repair in the extreme lower right corner verso, visible on very close inspection recto. The canvas undulates slightly. The canvas appears very worn at the edges around the stretcher particularly in the two top corners and the lower edge. The paint surface appears thin and worn in places near the edges.

There are two very small damages to the canvas to the right of the mammoth.

There are six pinholes around the edge of the canvas. On close inspection, there are a few scattered specks of paint loss.

Faint stretcher marks.

Surface dirt including two broken lines of what could be varnish running down the left edge of the canvas.

UV light reveals two patches or retouching to the corresponding repairs, retouching along the top edge and the extreme top of the mammoth, a further spot of retouching to the centre of the mammoth visible to the naked eye.
