Description
3rd century AD. A bronze rein guide ring for a horse collar, comprising a large leaf-shaped head with volute openwork, a round base and a quadrangular loop. See Junkelmann, M., Die Reiter Roms, Teil I: Reise, Jagd, Triumph and Circusrennen, Mainz am Rhein, 1990, fig.78, for similar guides with round head. 101 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). German art market before 2000. European gentleman living in UK. Property of a Surrey gentleman. This kind of fitting was positioned on the bottom of the yoke (with a split yoke between the arches) and were supposed to keep the reins from getting mixed up. [No Reserve]
