Item Details
Description
Rome, ca. 200 to 300 CE. This is a bronze chariot fitting in excellent condition with a functional cuboid back and a fine cast face of Attis decorating it. Attis, the god of vegetation and consort of Cybele, was part of an ancient cult in Greece that spread to Rome; Catallus wrote a poem about him. In this depiction, his face is chubby and youthful and he wears a Phrygian cap, which in ancient Rome is associated with the Mithraic Mysteries, an astrology-centric cult that had followers throughout the Roman Empire.
