Edward Barnes Celebrated Dirk Knife with US Eagles

Item Details

Description

Edward Barnes was in business in Sheffield with his sons starting in 1845. This Bowie is clearly aimed at the American market, using spreadwinged eagles on both sides of both the German silver guard and pommel, with the addition of a Liberty cap and sword on the pommel as well. The reverse ricasso is stamped EDWARD/BARNES & SONS/CELEBRATED/DIRK KNIFE and the upper portion of the blade bears a pair of banner scrolls reading, MANUFACTURED BY / EDWARD BARNES & SONS.

The blade shows gray with dark spots, the German silver mounts show some damage including a missing wing on the eagle, and the slabs show wear from long use. This is not a mint example by any means but was definitely carried and saw the elephant.
