Petite Greek Corinthian Pottery Askos w/ Siren

Item Details

Description

Ancient Greece, Corinth, ca. 6th century BCE. A mold-formed pottery askos of an egg-shaped form with a round but stable base, a perky tail protruding from the verso, tapered shoulders, and a head-shaped spout. Resting atop the body is the head of a siren bearing almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, thin lips, and large nodules of hair flanking her temples. The thick rim doubles as her minimalist headdress, and the entire vessel is covered in russet-red slip. Size: 2.75" W x 3.4" H (7 cm x 8.6 cm)

Condition

Repaired from several pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. A few stable pressure fissures to head, with light calcifications and fading to pigment across body, and softening to some finer details on siren face. Nice preservation to siren face and pigment. Old inventory label beneath base.
