Greece, Corinth, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A gorgeous pair of ceramic alabastra, both boasting elegant forms with a pointed base, an elongated body, a slender, conical neck, and an annular flared rim. Adorned with black and russet paints on a creamy beige-hued ground, both ancient vessels feature elaborate registers of birds, mythological winged females known as sirens, and abstract geometric motifs, all embellished with intricately incised details. Greek women used this type of vessel to hold scented oils or perfumes. Similar examples with more rounded, squat, globular bodies are referred to as aryballoi, and were used by men for the same purpose. Largest has been repaired from 2 pieces with restoration over break lines. Base of smaller has been reattached with restoration over break lines. Minor area of green residue on base of smaller. Significant chipping to painted decoration of both. Nicks and abrasions throughout both, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, excellent with lovely earthen deposits.
