Description
18th Century Ivory Brush Pot 

Chinese, 18th century.  A cylindrical ivory brush pot, surface engraved with birds and flowers, poem and three seals, the engraving enhanced with color, with two-character signature; ht. 4.75 in.

Special Provenance Note:
In July of 1900, General Adna R. Chafee of the U.S. Army was sent to China to command the Chinese Relief Expedition.  The U.S. Expeditionary force was formed to protect the U.S. and other foreign legations in Peking from attacks by the Boxers.

The consignor's grandfather was a member of the U.S. Ninth Infantry that was ordered from manila to China to serve under General Chaffee.  While there, he acquired the items offered here.

Age cracks and one large crack at the bottom, base is no longer connected.
