Description
A Chinese blue and white brush pot dating from the 17th century. The brush pot features a pair of deer with lingzhi beneath pine trees.
Dimensions are: 6 1/2 inches tall X 4 inches wide, 16.51 cm X 10.16 cm. All measurements are approximate.
Provenance: From the collection of Mr. Chen in McLean, VA, who inherited the piece from his father who acquired it in Fujian, China, in 1949. Lots 97 to 99 are from the same collection.
Condition: Good condition.
A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission.
The brush pot stands rigidly vertical, with an unglazed mouth rim. The porcelain paste is tight and the glazing is clear and lustrous. The illustration on the body depicts a pair of deer, a pine tree and lingzhi, symbolizing everlasting life and prosperity. The coloring is expertly controlled and well balanced. There is a six character blue and white seal mark "Made During the Chenghua Period of Ming Dyansty" on the bottom, as porcelain wares imitating the ones from Ming dynasty were quite common during the early Kangxi period. A similar item can be found in the collection of the Beijing Palace Museum, as no. 00109101. A similar item has been sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong in May 2014 as lot 628.
