Greece, Corinthian, ca. 6th century BCE. A petite terracotta jarlet with a polychrome motif painted on the base, body, and rim of the vessel. The wheel thrown vessel rests on a rounded, but stable base, with concentric circles painted around the base. The squat body has a broad shoulder and a short neck with a flared rim. The small opening leads into the interior. The exterior is painted with red and black motifs of animals, such as a wolf, and perhaps a bull or horse. Vessels like this example were designed to hold scented oils or perfumes for everyday or religious use. Size: 2.5" Diameter x 1" H (6.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s

Condition
Fading and chipping of pigments. Two old inventory labels on base. Intact with light earthen and mineral encrustations to interior. Nice root marks on exterior.
