Ancient Greece, Boeotian, ca. 575 to 550 BCE. A hand-built pottery fragment of a horse with black-glazed details for the horse's eyes, face mask, mane, and body. A horizontal panel of decorative zigzag patterns adorns the front of the animal's chest. A powerful body traces forward to a pair of slender legs, a thick neck, and a conical head with perky ears and a small crested mane. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 2.75" L x 1.25" W x 3.125" H (7 cm x 3.2 cm x 7.9 cm); 3.375" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Reninger collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA before 2000

Condition
This item is a fragment of a larger equine pottery figure. Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, losses to back half of body and parts of both front legs, fading and chips to glazed details, and some light roughness across most surfaces. Light earthen deposits throughout.
