Description
Edo-Meiji Period. 3 5/8" diameter. Finely lacquered over delicately turned wood. Tomato red/orange with gold rim and foot edge. Decorated with finely executed gold mon of the paulownia, representing the phoenix and bamboo on which it fed. The paulownia was exclusively associated with the royal household under Emperor Godaigo. Later it was conferred onto generals for brave and faithful service. The paulownia graced the great castles of Himeji, Osaka, and Nagoya and Fushimi built by Hideyoshi. Its popularity declined after his death but its use was perpetuated by the Toyotomi line. Excellent.
