The eight year old maker of this sampler, S S Hayward, incorporates a memorial and a verse honoring a four year old relative of who died 10 months earlier.
"The warmest heart the brightest eye/ The cheek of fairest bloom/ Must in the vale of darkness lie/ And grace the silent tomb/ To the memory of/ Jane E. Hayward/ who died on the/ 23rd of January/ 1832 Aged 4 Year/ S S Hayward/ Aged 8/ Year/ October 12/ 1832". The Cholera epidemic of 1832 was ravaging Boston and the surrounding area. Jane E. Hayward, the memorialized girl, died in 1832 within a few months of her Father and Aunt.
