Ancient Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A wonderful figural panel carved from silvery-gray schist that depicts a central figure standing behind his horse. Dressed in flowing robes, the figure stands with a belt draped across his chest and left shoulder, his right arm bent at the elbow and raised, and the pole of a crosshatched canopy perhaps supported in the crook of his left arm. Beneath the figure's upper body is his noble steed - bedecked with a strapped saddle, discoid ornaments, and a tail loop - while leaning its sizable head down to the ground to graze. Above the horse's rear is a set of leafy fans held in a quiver, perhaps meant to cool the faceless figure shown here. This is a fragment of a larger schist carving as shown. Losses to figure's face, right hand, left arm, lower body, and canopy pole as well as horse's legs and muzzle. Minor softening to some finer details, with light encrustations. Nice preservation to equine form and some figural details. Drilled on verso for mounting and display purposes.
