Description
Help us help those in need this holiday season! Artemis Gallery is donating 100% of the Buyer’s Premium from all lots sold in this auction to COMMUNITY FOOD SHARE. Each $1.00 donated = 3 meals!
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A lovely ovoid intaglio carved from opaque, forest-green stone with flat faces and lightly rounded peripheries. The front of the intaglio features the incised image of a standing bull with a stocky body, slender legs, a sinuous tail with a bushy tip, and a raised head bearing a prominent pair of horns. While lacking the telltale sun disk between the horns, this bull is perhaps representative of Apis, the sacred bull shown trampling atop the enemies of the Pharaoh. Custom putty impression included. Size: 0.7" L x 0.4" W (1.8 cm x 1 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Orange, California, USA collection; ex-collection of Philip Mitry, noted antiquarian in Cairo before 1950
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
