Description

Blanche K. Bruce Signed Deed, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Graded NM-MT 8, Freed Slave and U.S. Senator

A folded document, measuring 3.5" x 8.5" (folded), Washington, D.C., dated September 1, 1890. A Deed in Fee, No. 1511, signed "B.K. Bruce" as Recorder, from "Henry M. Baker to James M. Johnston." The document has been slabbed so that internal pages cannot be viewed. With uneven toning and minor spots of soiling throughout. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. The slab measures 5.5" x 12.5".

Blanche Kelso Bruce (1841-1898) was born into slavery in Virginia but gained his freedom when hostilities broke out at the start of the Civil War. He attended Oberlin College and ultimately was elected to the U.S. Senate, the second African American to achieve this. He represented Mississippi from 1875-1881, becoming the first elected African American senator to serve a full term.
