Payment Made to Samuel Huntington as Governor of Connecticut
1p, measuring 6.375" x 4.25", Connecticut, dated June 27, 1788. A payment document, No. 39, from John Lawrence, Treasurer, ordering Comptroller Oliver Wolcott to pay Samuel Huntington £10 "out of the Taxes appropriated for the Payment of the Civil List and charge the State." With docketing on verso. The document has flattened folds and uneven edges. Light uneven toning throughout. Ink bleed through from verso.
Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) was born in Connecticut to a large Connecticut farming family. He left home at 22, taught himself enough law to pass the bar in 1754, and at 34, was appointed King’s attorney for the colony of Connecticut. Huntington was a strong critic of the Coercive Acts passed by the British Parliament, and as a result, he was elected to represent Connecticut as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1775. As a delegate, he signed the Declaration of Independence, and in 1779, was elected 6th president of the Continental Congress, succeeding John Jay. He held that position until 1781 and later became Governor of Connecticut (1786-1796).
