Gouache and watercolor on paper three-quarter portrait of a seated woman with auburn hair by Russian artist Boris Chaliapin. Signed and dated 1943, with "L.A." after the date. Born in Moscow to an Opera singer father and a ballerina mother, Boris Chaliapin was already an important portrait painter in Russia before he moved to Paris to study art. Ten years later he moved to New York city where, while continuing as a fine artist, he produced over four hundred cover portraits for Time Magazine between 1939 and 1970. Chaliapin's work hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and is found in important public and private collections worldwide. Sight, approx. 29 1/4" x 21". Frame, approx. 35" x 26 3/4"
