Oil on canvas portrait of Gustavus Adolphus Myers (1801 - 1869), painted by his son William Barksdale Myers (1839 - 1873), framed, in as-found condition. The Myers were the most prominent Jewish family in Richmond, Virginia in the early to mid 19th century. Among other things, Gustavus Myers was an attorney, founder of the Virginia Historical Society, served on the board of Congregation Beth Shalome, and was a close associate of Judah Benjamin. His son William Barksdale Myers was an artist, who served as a Major in the Confederate Army.Provenance: Deaccessioned by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture to benefit collections care, preservation and future acquisitions.Visible image: approx. 29" x 23 3/4".Frame: approx. 34 1/2" x 29".D3.18
