Description
Evening View of Mt. Fuji from Lake Sai, "Saiko No Yusho" by Tsuchiya Koitsu, (1870-1949). Signed lower right, publishers seal outside left margin. Unusual frame with branded Japanese inscriptions explained in notes handwritten in ink to verso: "On July 31, 1951, I and 4 other officers on USS Okanoga (illeg) APA-220, climbed to top, stayed all night. At base of Volcano, we got hiding sticks from monks, and at each 1000 ft. level, monks branded sticks with hot iron to show elevation you had reached. We came back down on Aug. 1. Ship's engineering dept made branded stick into picture frame. We had made the assault with marines on Port of Incheon, Korea and the Hamhung, Hungnam, & Chinnampo Evacuations, Korean War."
