Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a charming rabbit atop an attached rectangular platform. The animal presents with squat, retracted legs beneath a stocky body, a perky tail protruding from the posterior, and a pair of crescent-shaped ears folded against the neck and back. The spherical head has incised almond-shaped eyes, thin brows, a tapered triangular nose, and an open mouth holding a curved grating tool with a serrated head. Traces of brown and black pigment are visible across the figure, and lustrous patina enrobes the entire composition. Size: 13.375" L x 6" W x 6.7" H (34 cm x 15.2 cm x 17 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Dave De Roche collection, Piedmont, California, USA
