Artist Bio:
Wilkinson was born in Cambridge, England, and attended Berkhamsted School in Hertforsdhire and St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School in London. His early artistic training occurred in the vicinity of Portsmouth and Cornwall, and at the Southsea School of Art, where he would also later teach. He also studied with seascape painter Louis Grier. At age 21 he studied academic figure painting in Paris, but was already interested in maritime subjects.

Wilkinson started his career as an illustrator in 1898. with The Illustrated London News and, later, the Illustrated Mail. He was a prolific poster artist designing for multiple railways. He joined the Royal marines and traveled extensively by sea, and would later work as a submarine officer and minesweeper during World War I, as well as a consultant on dazzle camouflage. He would be brought in during World War II as Officer of Camouflage once more, focusing on the concealment of airfields. Additionally, he traveled extensively to sketch and record the work of the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, and Costal Command through the war; 52 paintings produced during this time would be exhibited under the title The War at Sea, shown in the National Gallery in September 1944.

He was elected Hon. Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1919 and P.R.I. in 1937. He was knighted in 1948 and appointed a CBE in 1948. The artist created a painting titled The Approach to Plymouth Harbour for the smoking room of the RMS Titanic, which sank with the ship. One of the finest marine painters of this century, he is well represented in many public collections. Wilkinson was an active and prolific artist up to his death in 1971.
