O/C PASTORAL LANDSCAPE, CHINA MAINE HERMAN ROESSLER Signed lower left “Herman Roessler”. Label on verso reads: “Brilliant Trees of Autumn in the countryside of South China, Maine” “Oil Painting [1939] Anonymous Loan”. SS 18” high x 24” wide. OS: 24 ¾” high x 30 ½” wide. Excellent condition. Note: After his death much of Herman Roessler’s work purchased by Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Note: Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville Maine. Roessler Exhibition, December 1, 1958 – December 31, 1958. A selection of 25 Herman Roessler small paintings and drawings on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is presented. After leaving a drafting job (as designer for Tiffany Studios) in New York, Roessler eked out a living working on a farm in South China, Maine as he took care of his father. During World War II, Roessler was sent to Washington for war work of an artistic nature. This opportunity exposed him to many of the great national galleries, and rekindle his desire to paint. In 1955, Roessler began work on his extraordinary series of religious paintings. At this time, he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and was in poor health.
