A beautifully engraved map with hand coloring of the Diocese of Osnabruck with the territory to Quakenbruck, Wittlage, Iburg, Bentlage and Lingen; a small view of Osnabruck at the lower left and an inset map of Reckenberg / Wiedenbruck at the lower right; the episcopal coat of arms with dedication cartouche above and several small painted territorial coats of arms throughout the map. Johannes Gigas, the author of the map, was a doctor (personal physician to Elector Ferdinand I of Bavaria and the Bishop of Munster) and also worked as a mathematician, physicist, and cartographer. He was known for relatively precise land surveys in Westphalia and published an atlas with maps of Westphalian territories in Cologne in 1620, which was soon thereafter published in the Netherlands by Blaeu and Janssonius in a modified new edition.
