Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $450**

Northern Europe, Great Britain, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A cylindrical cork and leather bucket for carrying cordite, a smokeless propellent that replaced gunpowder during the late 19th century. The British coat of arms with the lion crest, unicorn, and mottos "Dieu et mon droit" (meaning "God and my right" - a British monarchy motto) and "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("Shame on anyone who thinks evil of it" used as British chivalric order motto) are painted on the side. Two metal rivets on the sides below the rim would have one secured a leather handle. The bucket is constructed with cork covered with leather and burlap stitched on the interior. Over the years these old buckets have been converted into other uses, umbrella holders or rubbish bins. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 15.5" H (14 cm x 39.4 cm)

Provenance: private Lake City, Colorado, USA collection, acquired 2020
