Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Gnathian, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A gorgeous polychrome terracotta lekythos, the body decorated with a net pattern in black with added white pigment dots at some of the interstices, with a flat circular base, thick-walled body, singular applied handle, thin tubular neck, and a flared rim. This vessel was most likely used for storing olive oil; however, beyond this utilitarian aspect, it has an attractive bulbous body and finely painted decorative program, the net motif perhaps referencing sea waters. An elegant example indeed! Size: 1.875" W x 3.75" H (4.8 cm x 9.5 cm).
Provenance: private east coast of Florida, USA collection; ex-old French collection, Paris, France, acquired 1977 to 1987
