Japanese Woodblock Print, originally c1795 (this a c1930/40s Showa era edition from recarved blocks), unknown Publisher.
SIZE IN INCHES: 10.5 x 15.75
COMMENTS: Skillfully executed "bokashi" shading, extensive "gauffrage" (embossing), highly detailed hairlines. Utamaro created numerous designs that depict the relationship between Yamauba and her adopted son, Kintaro, who grew up to become a legendary hero. In this charming scene Kinaro is seen atop Yamauba's back as she combs her long black hair.
