Description
Japanese Woodblock Print, originally c1795 (this a 1916 printing from recarved blocks), Goyo Studio Publisher (circular "Goyo" seal front and verso).
SIZE IN INCHES: 7.25 x 11.25 (chuban)
COMMENTS: Skillfully executed "gauffrage" (embossing), highly detailed hairlines. Utamaro created numerous designs that depict the relationship between Yamauba and her adopted son, Kintaro, who grew up to become a legendary hero. In this charming scene Yamauba ties Kintaro's topknot while he looks in the mirror and imitates his mother's expression with a gesture that cleverly echoes the role of the mirror. NOTE: A rarely seen print from Goyo's Studio.
