Description
(1844-1914) Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the oldest in history at the time of his appointment, a Confederate veteran from the Civil War. Died only four years into his term. Rare T.L.S. also initialed once as an Associate Justice on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., February 14, 1912, addressed to Clarence J. Owens accepting an invitation to attend a banquet of the 'Southern Society.' Lurton writes a postscript at the conclusion that reads in full: 'Do not call upon me for any speaking. There are those who do that well. I am not one and beg you to protect me.' Accompanied by a letter of transmittal from Lurton's secretary. A few ink stains and file holes to the top left.
